Liz Dunphy

Workplace Mediator

About Liz Dunphy, Professional Background

Liz Dunphy brings over 25 years of experience in fostering healthy relationships in the workplace, with a significant career in Leadership and Organisational Development.

Her journey began as a Research Assistant at the University of Leeds’ School of Psychology, where she studied human behaviour.

She later joined the University of Bradford’s Staff and Organisational Development Team, dedicating six years to training and coaching leaders.   She was responsible for Learning & Development support for Trade Unions and the inclusivity groups within the University and was often called upon to mediate conflicts between teams and individuals.   She led team coaching initiatives with departments, facilitating honest conversations within teams and supporting them to work through difficult issues to sustainable resolutions.    Additionally in this role, Liz delivered a range of communication skills training, including Assertiveness, Coaching Skills, Dealing with Difficult People, and Facilitation Skills.

Liz went on to work for the prestigious coaching consultancy PB Coaching (later known as Novum).  As well as her role as Lead Trainer for their Post Graduate Certificate in Business & Executive Coaching, she provided Executive Coaching for leaders managing conflicts in their teams.

In addition to Civil and Commercial Mediation training, Liz is trained in several psychological approaches, including Gestalt, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, and Transactional Analysis.    She has worked in Education, Healthcare, Engineering and Automation Sectors.

Liz’ Mediation Approach

Liz’ experience and psychological training equip her to mediate conversations that move beyond the surface-level, encouraging the expression of underlying needs, expectations, priorities and hopes.  This approach enables the co-creation of more sustainable resolutions.   Liz brings a calming, non-judgemental, non-partisan presence

She offers a clear structure at each stage of the mediation but is open to flexing this in response to parties’ needs and concerns as it’s vital that there is buy-in to the process at the early stages.  She takes a blended approach of one to one meetings and plenary sessions.   One to one meetings provide a safe space for individuals to get issues and difficult emotions off their chest and to help them prepare to talk and listen effectively.  At other times she mediates through joint party conversations with clear groundrules and boundaries.  At all times she encourages a solution-focussed approach.    As a learning and development professional, she aims not only to support parties to reach resolution but that they gain communication skills through the process that will strengthen relationships in the longer term.

Liz speaks good Spanish and conversational Arabic (Egyptian dialect).
